I'm Goin' Tokeland

The Stampede started this year from Miyagi's place in Tokeland, Washington.  The town of Tokeland, with a population of 194, is on the thin Long Beach Peninsula that separates Wallapa Bay from the Pacific Ocean.  This is Washington State and Washington state has rain.
Tokeland is about 800 miles from my house in Wine Country, California.  I left on Wednesday, June 12 figuring a leisurely three days to Tokeland, a day of rest and then start the Stampede on Sunday morning, June 16.
The trip went as planned, I left before noon and rode up Interstate 5 to Redding.  Redding was hot as expected, it's always hot in Redding in summer.  From Redding Highway 5 heads up hill to Mt. Shasta.  Things got cooler but the scenery is beautiful and the riding was good.  I camped at the Valley of The Rouge State Park.
The next morning, I headed north expecting to have breakfast in the town of Grant's Pass.  It has been a while since I have been to Grant's Pass and the town has grown.  There is the new town, where there every store is a chain store.  Then there is the old town, there is actually a sign that says "Old Town" this way.  I could not find a place that looked inviting for breakfast so I hit Hwy 5 again.  The weather was getting worse, it looked like rain and it was getting cold.
That's when I saw a small sign that said, "Heaven On Earth."  I pulled off and found a faded wood building called Heaven on Earth.  When I walked in the door, I believed I had found it, there was a bakery and hot cookies everywhere, the food was very good, the prices cheap and I was tag teamed by two waitresses, one  a cute freckle face girl, the other a kindly grandmother type.   My chair was comfortable, my coffee cup never empty and there was soft guitar music playing in the background.  I began to wonder if maybe this place was a kind of snare set by the dark one.

So I took off into a huge norhtwestern style rainstorm.  Somewhere between Eugene and Corvallis in Oregon, I saw an odd shaped cloud that looked a little funnel like, I later learn that there was some speculation in the area as to if it was a tornado or not.  Whatever it was, it did tear the roofs of several buildings in the area.  I resisted the temptation to return to Heaven on Earth and stayed the soggy course.
By late afternoon after a 150 miles of rain, I stopped in a town called Wilsonville.  I used my phone to check the weather report and when I learned that the next day was forecast to be dry, I holed up for the night.  The next morning with only 175 miles left to Tokeland, I rode through Longview and along the Columbia River and made it to Miyagi's by mid day.

This is the info that I have. Paul and Chris got Hardass patches.  I DNF'ed this year, electrical problems.
The route started in Tokeland, WA this year and followed Hwy 12 over the Lolo Pass to Minneapolis. From Minneapolis the route went to Green Bay, WI then turned south through Chicago and through Indianapolis, IN to Hwy 50 where it turned east to Washington DC.  From DC the route went through Annapolis, then cut south to the finish at the Greenleaf Inn in Pinebluff, NC.
It was a grueling 3600 miles of winding secondary roads.  There is a sign at the start of the ascent to Lolo Pass reads 99 miles of winding road.  In addition to the normal rigors of the Stampede and the 550cc displacement restriction, there were bitterly cold nights, heavy traffic, animals, fog and more to deal with on the route.
I'm still traveling around and have a ton of photos.  I'll write more and post photos when I can.

Sedona Arizona

We left Laughlin and the plan was to tour northern Arizona.  At Kingman we caught the old Route 66 and  spent the night in Prescott.  From Prescott we went through Gerome an old mining town high in the mountains.  I had been in Gerome as a child and at that time it was close to being a ghost town.  There were about five people living in the town at that time.  From Gerome we headed to Sedona.

The road north from Sedona is really a nice ride.  Oak Creek Canyon, Hwy 89A, winds up the valley through some spectacular scenery.  We stayed overnight in Flagstaff.

Planet of the Apes

The apes were out at Laughlin, and maybe it's just me but they seem to be getting a little wide as well as high.

Southwest Tour, The River Run

Every year, sometime near the end of April we pack up and head to Laughlin, Nevada for The River Run.  Our plan was to head to the motorcycle rally and then take a little tour of Arizona after, so we headed for Laughlin.
April often has bad weather that makes travel over the Sierra mountains impossible.  This year the weather cooperated and we were able to take one of my favorite rides, Carson Pass (Hwy 88) to Hwy 395 which runs along the eastern side of the Sierras to Bishop, California.
Home in wine country to Bishop is about 370 miles, a good if slightly long days ride.  We left around noon, which put us in the high country after dark.  John Muir called the Sierras the "gentle wilderness,"but he must have meant during the day because after dark it gets cold.

Next morning we left Bishop and headed south on Highway 395 to Lone Pine, where we turned east and headed to Death Valley.  Death Valley is a giant optical illusion.  Where ever you are in Death Valley, everywhere else seems to be down hill.  I think the illusion is because the place is so big that you can see the curvature of the earth so if you are at the north end of the valley the south end looks like it is downhill and visa versa.

I usually stop at the 100 feet below sea level sign for a photo.  Death Valley Junction is not actually in Death Valley, it is east of Death Valley.  It's also a good place to stop for a photo.

It's another 370 miles from Bishop to Laughlin.  The weather in Death Valley was in the high 90's, hot but not crazy hot.  We went through Parumph. Nevada and Las Vegas and arrived in Laughlin around sundown.

My Stampede Bike (2)

The Stampede bike is coming along.  I've still got a lot to do, but this year I started early and I'll have it done by June.

Oh Yea, here's what it looked like when I started.

Build a Better Mousetrap

I met Mike Thielvoldt at the Carnegie Hill Climb, he is an inventor and entrepreneur.  His company, Jackrabbit Devices, makes a throttle control for hill climb bikes called The Trigger.

Mike's device eliminates the twist grip and replaces it with a "trigger" operated by the index finger . Mike says the trigger lets the index finger work through a natural range of motion and keeps the rider from dropping the shoulder.

His display is quite convincing.  He has a handlebar mounted like a chin up bar, he then invites people to do a pull up and work the throttle at the same time.  I have to admit that the Trigger works.

Mike seems like a nice guy, he is clearly proud of his invention and has an excitement about his product that's infectious.  Mike's web site is www.jackrabbitdevices.com.

Hill Climb

It's been a couple of years since I went to the hill climb at Carnegie SVRA (State Vehicular Recreation Area).  Carnegie is located off Hwy 580 west of Livermore, California.  I noticed that the bikes had changed some from the last time.  There were more water cooled sport bike engines stuffed into hill climb chassis.

You might think that a hill climb is about motorcycles and a hill, but you would be wrong.  It's about nice people, dogs, kids, cute girls and families, all having fun.

Moto Haven Motorsports

I just had some work done at Moto Haven Motorsports, in Novato, Ca.  I have had work done there before, they do good work. Marty Schilber installed my gear drive cams several years ago.
Moto Haven also rents bikes so if you are headed for wine country or any where in Northern California for that matter, give them a call.

My Stampede Bike (1)

Here it is, my Stampede 8 bike in the works.  I've got a ton o' stuff to do to it and I'm making a list.  I've got an air bag to spring the seat and that's first on the list.

The Stampede is becoming an obsession.  At almost any time I find my mind going over the things that I learned from the last Stampede.

Hatt's San Quentin Toy Run 2012

December and I go to Hatt's Toy Run. The weather was cold and foggy in some places, in other places just cold, I rode down to Pier 15 in San Rafael.

Santa always makes it to the toy run.

A couple of nice side hacks showed up    to help haul loads of toys.  I keep running into these BMW R1200C bikes, this one with a sidecar. Strange but compelling

This Royal Enfield also showed up it's a bullet 500 and not a new one.

The Toy Run always goes to San Quentin Village, where the toys are delivered for the children of San Quentin inmates.  Then we headed north on Highway 101 to The Washoe House.  The Washoe House was built in 1859 and was a stage stop between Petaluma and Santa Rosa.  We refought the Battle of Washoe House, but instead of returning to Petaluma we rode north to the Stokes Ranch near Windsor.

Stokes Ranch has a small chappel and it was announced that there would be a wedding, and we were all invited.  Brett Hatt was getting married.

Congratulations!

The Big Kawasaki is Sold

I sold the big Kawasaki, I had to do it.  Next year’s Stampede is going to be limited to 550cc’s and the Kawai was a 1000.  The thing ran like a combo freight train and Swiss watch.  Sure there were a few mechanical issues during the race, but the engine itself ran with power and enthusiasm that inspired confidence.  This bike could really eat up the miles.
I hate selling a motorcycle.  I feel a connection with the machine through places and adventures.  This bike and I shared a very big adventure.  Besides this bike just looked right in my garage.
I put the shocks back on for Sean, the new owner.  I also removed the auxiliary gas tank and remounted the seat.  Sean seemed delighted with the bike and I hope he enjoys it as much as I did.

Thunderstorm Season

Rain had  been dogging us every afternoon.  Mornings would be clear and sunny but by mid-day the clouds would start to form and by afternoon they would start forming into huge thunderstorms.

I didn't mind the rain but I was worried about getting hit by lightening.
